Pet Photo Session FAQs
What is the format of the photo session?
I will normally ask some basic questions about you and your pets before the photo shoot to understand if the pet is friendly, well socialised, find out their level of training if any, whether they need to stay on a lead, whether they are toy or food motivated. Plus I will ask what kind of shots you would like to capture or if you have any specific ideas for an image.
I will also ask about locations the pet is comfortable in, really we want your pet to be as comfortable, relaxed and happy as possible. I can help with ideas for good local locations too.
Once we meet, I will try and make sure the pet is comfortable with me and my camera, by sitting with them and/or playing/fussing with them for a while.
With dogs, we simply go for a walk and I will use the surroundings to identify and capture natural and posed shots based on the location and try and meet any specific requirements/ideas for images you may have requested. We will also capture some fun action/playing type images, so if your dog has any medical conditions I should know about, please let me know.
With cats and other small animals it’s best to photograph them in your home and garden environment. With smaller animals, using food and props sometimes adds to the images and makes them more fun!
During the photo shoot you may also be required to help get the attention of your pets, using food/toys and commands alongside me or my assistant (my husband Shaun).
How far will you travel to do a photo shoot?
I live in between Poole and Bournemouth but will travel up to 10 miles outside of that area inclusive of the session fee. Any further and a travel fee will be added to the cost at £0.50 per additional mile each way.
Does my dog need to be trained? /They are very energetic/shy/timid, what happens then?
No, don’t worry, I will work with your pet to capture their natural personality. If they need to be on a lead to help us, that’s fine, I can work on that in post-processing and I have some tricks up my sleeve to get the shots we want.
Please don’t feel you need to wear your dog out before a photo shoot either, I tend to try and get some shots of them before their tongues start lolling around too much!
I have more than 2 pets, can I have them all photographed?
Yes you can, however the dynamics of the photo shoot change and the length of time I need to shoot for may change so an additional charge of £20 per pet will be added to the standard session fee.
My pet is elderly/ill, is this something you can cater for?
Of course, I am more than happy to do these photo shoots at your home/in your garden/local park and normally I would suggest we try and capture the love between you and your pets during these sessions. So be prepared to be in some of the photos, dress as you want to photographed but also be prepared to kneel down, lay down or sit down in the surroundings.
What should I bring to the photo shoot?
Their favourite outdoor toys for dogs, i.e. ball, frisbee, rope etc, high value/quality treats, short to medium length leads (no expandable leads please), nice collars, poo bags and a towel/brush any props you may want to use i.e. christmas hat or scarf. For cats and small animals, favourite snacks, toys, catnip, bedding, clothing, props etc.
Can I bring my family to the session?
Yes, however the more people there are the more likely the pet will get distracted. So I would ask that if one person, plus myself/ my assistant could give the commands to get the pet’s attention and then any other family members hang back, unless we are including them in the images.
What if the weather is bad on the day?
I will watch the weather and make a decision the day before the shoot if it’s going to go ahead. The conditions I definitely won’t shoot in is rain and severe wind, as nobody enjoys that and neither does my camera. If the session is cancelled due to bad weather or treacherous road conditions, we will reschedule to another time.
How many images will I get for my session fee?
Approximately 20 edited high resolution digital images available via Shootproof online gallery, which you will be able to download and use for social media or printing. The link to this will be emailed to you within two weeks of the photo shoot.
Can I have my images on a Memory Stick?
Yes, but an additional charge of £10 will be required plus £3 postage and packing.
Can I order prints, frames and products from you?
Yes you can! I use a high quality printing and framing service for imagery. Prints start at a few £'s each and the framed prints start at £75. However, you are also free to use any printing and framing service of your choice. Just send them a copy of the digital full resolution image you want to use. Just remember you pay for what you get and quality can vary.
Who owns the copyright to the images?
I retain the copyright for all my images. Once you have downloaded your images you will be free to use them on social media and get them printed as you wish, on a personal use license. However, you will not be permitted to enter them into any competitions as your own or use them for any commercial purpose, unless an agreement with me is in place.
